Where AI Actually Helps a Trades Business, and Where It Doesn't

Cutting through the hype with realistic, practical ways AI and automation can reduce administrative burdens for trades contractors and suppliers.

Written by Terry Allison.

There is a lot of noise right now about artificial intelligence. You hear claims about "10x growth" or AI running your company. As a practical trades business owner, it is easy to dismiss it all as hype.

That is a mistake, but so is trying to force AI into areas where plain old common sense works better.

Where AI can help a trades business

  • Speeding up initial response times to customer inquiries so leads do not go cold while you are on a job site.
  • Turning messy voice memos or site notes into clean, professional scope descriptions for estimates.
  • Summarizing long customer email threads or supplier price updates in seconds.
  • Automating routine follow-ups on unpaid invoices or unaccepted quotes.

Where AI does not belong

AI should not replace your experienced judgement, your relationships with important suppliers or simple processes that already work well.

If technology does not save your staff real hours or make life easier for your customers, skip it.
